Lucy, Port St. Florida — Family budgets have been hit hard by the significant increase in living costs since the Pandemic.

WPTV investigated how some people are finding ways to counter the rising cost of living in the sun in Florida.

For some homeowners trying to save money, they only had to look up at the sky.

“Well, I looked it up. It was very, very economical, and it looked like the sun was shining here,” said Mark Booth. “We are in Sunshine.”

Boos recently installed solar panels on the roof of his home in St. Lucie County. Facing south and west to give him all the power he and his wife need.

Mark Boos explains how solar panels at home have dramatically reduced electricity bills.

“It makes a lot of sense,” said his wife, Lisa Booth. “You have almost free energy. Obviously, you have to pay for the panel.”

And while it’s not cheap, the Boos family points out that they are paying the panel $ 150 a month for funding.

Before installing the panel, electricity bills doubled to $ 300 a month, but Florida Power & Light’s bills are now ridiculously low.

“”[Our FPL bill is] For $ 8 a month and $ 9 a month, we run air conditioners, pool pumps, lights, TVs, and dishwashers, “says Mark Boos.

Lisa Booth explains why she and her husband decided to install solar panels in their homes.

Even after the sun goes down, electricity from the FPL is still needed, but there are also tax cuts for solar power.

And because there are so many sunny days, Florida residents are turning to solar power to save money when all costs are high these days.

“Of course, you’re giving up a lot of convenience, so it’s really hard to get completely off the grid,” said Kimberly Palmer, a personal finance expert at Nerd Wallet.

Hopefully the numbers can save money on big changes like solar, Palmer said. The average cost can be well over $ 10,000 to $ 30,000, depending on the size of the system. First of all, it is important to check the electricity bill and installation cost.

Kimberly Palmer offers advice on how families can save money in these difficult economic conditions.

“Solar panels may seem like a really daunting step to some, but there are smaller steps, such as replacing a large appliance in a home,” Palmer said. Says. “If you have old appliances such as old refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, etc., they often actually suck in much more energy than newer models, so in some cases, replacing them. Is a big upfront cost, but it pays off quickly, and because it uses so little energy, you save money. “

There are also things she recommends, such as reducing expensive services, both inside and outside the home. As for the Boos family, they are currently thinking of using solar to save even more.

“If you want to use a backup power source to power your home at night, they sell a battery backup unit, which we plan to investigate later this year,” Boos said.

Therefore, for some homeowners, getting off the grid and using the Florida sun for electricity can be a way to avoid pricing from paradise.
