SAN JOSE — Smart & Final plans to open a large warehouse store in San Jose in a building that has long served as a grocery store, according to a banner on the retail site.

The warehouse-style food and home goods store has signed a deal to lease a space in South San Jose occupied by Lucky, one of Modesto’s California brands of Save Mart supermarkets.

Smart & Final is looking to hire several people, according to a spot check on the warehouse store’s job page at 430 Blossom Hill Road, San Jose.

Smart & Final Extras have banners proclaiming “coming soon” hanging on fences in front of buildings and shopping centres.

The new store is located in Downer Square, a regional retail center with addresses ranging from 402 to 444 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose.

Downer Square occupies approximately 6.9 acres, according to documents on file with the Santa Clara County Assessor’s Office.

The total area of the shopping center is about 73,500 square feet, according to a posting on the LoopNet commercial real estate listing service.

The former Lucky Site totals an estimated 39,000 square feet, according to a notice of availability posted on the website of Coates & Sowers, the Campbell-based property management firm that handles Downer Square.

After Smart & Final opens, the warehouse store will join Walgreen Drugstore and become a major anchor in Downer Square.

Downer Square was built in 1966, says a LoopNet post.

“We rarely have vacancies at this center,” Coates & Sowers said in a post about Downer Square.

In addition to Anchor Tenants, the L-shaped complex houses Fresh & Clean cleaners, a nail art salon, Pearl River Chinese Restaurant, Downer Square Shoe & Luggage, Downer Square Bottle Shop and Yum Yum Donuts.

According to a Coates & Sowards article, “Almost all tenants are 20+, 40+, 50+ years old.”
