The umbrella house is named after the curved roof of the courtyard that connects and protects the two wings of the dwelling.

Inspired by the Yakutian structure, the house was designed and built by lawyer George Norton and his wife, Adele Woods Norton, a groundbreaking architectural firm, Jersey Devil, built as a retired home. ..

“That’s really clear,” said Patrick Jordan of PS Property, who listed the property with business partner Steuart Smith in January after his wife died at the age of 90. George died a few years ago.

The aluminum trellis courtyard with lap pool is “amazing,” Jordan said. “It’s the front of the house, and every time I enter there, the hair on my arm stands for a panoramic view of the San Jacinto Mountains.”

The house has two wings connected in a trellis courtyard, like an arched parasol.

He said the outer walls of the structure were reinforced concrete insulated with recycled polystyrene. “We are in a country of earthquakes,” he said. “This house is a tank.”

During construction, the Jersey Devil team lived in an airstream trailer on site, making it easy to adjust the design in the event of a problem, he added.

The 2,596-square-foot dwelling, which presides over 3.74 acres, has three bedrooms, three full bathrooms, one half bathroom, and an oversized two-car garage.

There is a waterfall at the entrance that is part of the natural cooling system. The vast outdoor living space that connects the two wings of the house has a 75-foot cantilever lap pool. Most windows have electric shades and the courtyard has a mist system to cool the air.

The view is beautiful with postcards.

Neighborhood notes

Located in the southeastern part of Palm Springs, Araby Cove is a small, quiet enlave of about 70 homes known for its bohemian atmosphere and eclectic architecture.

“It’s the Laurel Canyon in the desert,” Jordan said, adding that the Umbrella House is below the upscale district of South Ridge, where celebrity homes such as Bob Hope and Steve McQueen are located. “You feel away, but it’s actually close to South Palm Springs and all its restaurants, shops and other facilities.”

He said Araby Cove attracts many wildlife, including birds, bobcats and coyotes. “There is a tree in a property called a” quail condo “for all the quails that live there,” he said.
