Oldest home in Glencoe sells for $1.5M

Built in the mid-1800s, the 7-bedroom, 6,987-square-foot second Empire Italian-style mansion in Glencoe is Glencoe’s oldest home, sold for $ 1.5 million on May 23.

The 15-room mansion at Glen Code Live was built as the country house of Walter Gurney, the former mayor of Chicago. Walter Gurney is the origin of the name of the village of Gurney and was greatly expanded in 1876. More than a century later, the mansion was the subject of major reconstruction and rejuvenation in 1996 and 1997.

After serving as Mayor of Chicago, Gurney was appointed president of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad, which built the railroad through downtown Glencoe. Gurney often worked with partners to purchase land in the area where the railway station would be developed.

But in Glencoe, Gurney built his own house overlooking the station. This building was a boarding house during the Great Depression and was a multi-unit building after World War II. The mansion was also severely damaged by the fire in June 1962.

The three-story mansion has 7½ bathrooms, two fireplaces, an 11-foot ceiling, a two-foot crown molding, and two staircases with antique mahogany New Elpost and handrails. Other features include a 26-foot wraparound front porch, office space on both the second and third floors, and a primary bedroom suite on the second floor with a balcony and two separate custom closets. On the 3rd floor, there are 3 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a 2nd laundry room and an exercise room.

The mansion is located on 0.64 acres of land.
