Fulton County, Georgia — Channel 2 Action News becomes a reality about the affordable housing crisis and its impact on the minority community.

Booker T. Washington, a local real estate developer and investor, is on a mission to help people find housing solutions, especially in the southern metro. Channel 2’s Dave Huddleston says Washington is doing it in a “microhome.”

From napkins to landing in South Fulton County — Washington and his team realized his dream at College Park’s South Park Cottage.

Washington is from Atlanta and grew up in the community. He asked himself how he could be a developer or entrepreneur in another way.

“I’m from southwestern Atlanta and grew up in this community, and I faced a crisis of conscience,” Washington said. “I said I want to remain a real estate developer and entrepreneur. Yes, my goal is to make a profit, but can I do that in another way?”

The development of his microhome is “another way”. One-bedroom and two-bedroom microhomes are 350-600 square feet. There are 29 units and they sold out at a price of $ 200,000 to $ 230,000 within two months of their launch.

Teacher Alexia Gosier, 25, said she was shocked by the dramatic rise in average home prices, but decided that it was best to move from renting to buying.

“This was an affordable price for me and was affordable with just an education salary,” Gosier said.

Trend story:

Microhomes allow owners to save on mortgage payments and utilities, occupy less space, and lower property taxes.

Washington said such homes are a solid option for first-time homebuyers, those looking to miniaturize, and those driven out of the neighborhood by gentrification.

“Especially Atlanta minority home ownership continues to decline, especially for those who have just graduated from college, are downsizing, have empty nest syndrome, and they need a choice. , We must be able to find some mechanism, “Washington said.

Washington is also trying to offer more housing options to the South Metro.

“South Park Cottage is the first black and minority-built microcommunity in the United States. We’re proud of it,” Washington said.

South Park Cottage is currently under construction.

Next is Community Union City. Washington said he has set his goals in the heart of Atlanta.
