When AJ Dewberry started looking for a new home in Atlanta, he knew that what he wanted most of all was plenty of outdoor space.
I grew up in the small town of Griffin, Georgia, about 40 miles south. It’s technically part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, but as Dewberry briefly explains, it’s nothing like Atlanta. He always felt that he could go outside in nature. It was imperative that he not try too hard.
“Griffin is the country,” said Dewberry, 29, founder and owner of Level 10 Repairs, a popular Atlanta cell phone repair company. “I’m used to privacy, I have a room outside, and I drive a four-wheeler. As far as it goes, it was really important to me.
In May 2021, he was also nearing a long-standing personal deadline to own a home by the age of 30. He needed a little more time, but he bought a vacant lot and began laying out his parts to build a house. his own. He reached out to lenders to learn about the options available and strengthened his credit and savings over the next year.
“I’m used to making money and spending money,” he said. “But I know I need to start building an asset with that money.”

A year later, after a bank approved a $680,000 loan and a small gift of cash from his aunt, Mr. Dewberry began looking for land. “I thought with that approval, I could really build my own estate and get all the land he wanted,” he said.
But after researching the possibilities and considering time constraints, he changed course. “I looked at his 12 parcels and realized it wasn’t the fastest route,” he said. “I was ready to stay home.”
The median summer home price in the Atlanta area was about $400,000, said Fleur-de-Lie Realty broker Austin Fleury, who helped Mr. Dewbery find a property. From $500,000 to $600,000, Fleury said buyers could buy him a five- or six-bedroom townhouse or condo.
“We wanted it to be close enough to downtown Atlanta, have a lot of bedrooms, and still have an outdoor country feel,” Dewberry said. He began looking for properties that were either move-in ready or required minimal work and would one day house a pool.
“Atlanta is unique,” said Mr. Fleury. Marietta, Decatur, Sandy His Springs and many other places are really nice so I know he can get the space, a mansion of sorts, and drive from downtown he can be within 20 minutes. I was. ”
