First tenant set to move into new Raleigh Iron Works development

Raleigh, NC (WTVD) — Eighteen acres off Atlantic Avenue are being transformed into one of the capital’s newest multi-purpose destinations. One of his developers of Ponce City Market in Atlanta and Chelsea Market in New York City is building Raleigh Ironworks.

More than 200 apartment units and growing. There are plans for pedestrian streets, restaurants and office space.

There are a few surprises on site, including a two-story adult slide.

“We wanted to create something whimsical, fun and playful, so it’s a grown-up slide that we felt ticked the box,” said Grubb Ventures commercial director Reese Mackenzie Wilson.

There is also a swing set and fire pit for employees to curl up on their laptops.

This feature aims to encourage people to return to the office instead of working from home.

The first commercial tenants will move in next month.

Other small businesses are planning new ventures.

Ponisaurus Brewing Sign on and start brewing Award winning sour on site. The original location is in Durham.

“The hospitality scene in Raleigh is great. We already have a lot of partners,” said Nick Hawthorne Johnson, owner of Ponisaurus Brewing. “I was thrilled to see them bring back such an exciting place in Raleigh and do it in a way that I think is really cool, inspiring and imbuing it with creative life.”

Builders are renovating the area and paying tribute to its history.

“When this site was born in the 1950s, it was the Peden Steel Site. . “Or the goal was to really highlight that history. You can see a lot, because this is the original building, I wanted to emphasize the original steel, but I wanted to integrate it with the new one, so you can see the new beams next to the old ones.”

The developer hopes to hold a retail store grand opening and start renting out apartments next spring.
