In the name of fairness, council member Jesse Moreno has been pushing a plan that the majority of owners of more than 500 acres of land affected have made clear they don’t want it. About 650 property owners voted against and about 271 voted in favor of the downzoning plan, according to the report.

Many years ago, Elm Bush was a low-income neighborhood where black working-class families built their homes. But that has long changed, and the days of isolated cities and affordable enclaves are long gone.

Equity cannot come from using government power to artificially suppress property values ​​through downzoning. It can come from enabling people to realize the value of their investment in places over time.

A person who owns land in Elm Bush should not retroactively downzone to prevent him from building a two-story house within the zoning rights that were set when the land was purchased. There is none. But that’s exactly what Moreno and the city council majority are trying to do.

It’s hard to imagine that members of the council would be equally sympathetic to a plan that would affect their homes and significantly reduce the value of their investments. do you do?

Some of this boils down to aesthetic concerns about new homes being built in elm bushes. Taste is subjective and there are many opinions on architecture. But that is no basis for telling property owners that they cannot build to previously zoned heights to discourage the construction of two-story homes.

The right thing to do is delay voting today so Elm Bush neighbors can work together to create a plan that will treat existing property owners fairly.
