with no car London Wheatleys This 3 bedroom home on Eyot Island overlooks the Thames on one side and a quiet creek on the other.

Designed by BCDH Architects and built in 2000, this one-story home is hidden behind a small white gate. This gate leads to a structure clad in sapele wood on black steel pillars that elevate it above the grass and wildflowers. The property is also secluded in Wheatley’s Ayot, adding to the sense of privacy.

The architecture of the house is intended to complement the idyllic riverside setting.

Inside, the open living space is designed with a simple palette to enhance the light and sense of volume. Ceilings extend to about 10 feet high, as do full-height windows. Sliding glass doors lead to terraces that surround each side of the house. The two bedrooms in the main house have built-in storage and full-height glass doors with direct views of the River Thames that slide out onto the wraparound terrace.

Chloe Bliss, senior sales team manager at The Modern House said, “A great place to have a cool drink in the dappled sunshine, you can dip in the creek for a swim in the fresh water.”

In the kitchen, a free-standing island is centered with countertops extending along one wall. Gray counters and cabinets provide ample storage space, and the pantry is hidden through a tall-open doorway. There is also a storage cupboard with washer/dryer in the hallway.

This 1,146-square-foot home has two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, and a 199-square-foot annexe with one bedroom and ensuite.

The main building has underfloor heating. Kitchens feature premium appliances including Smeg range cookers, Miele dishwashers, and stainless steel sinks with Vola faucets.

A large annexe in the garden area has a bedroom and en-suite bathroom with a skylight and walk-in shower. The space also has a wood burning stove and views over the meadows.

On the east-facing side of the garden, the house is moored to the River Thames. “So if you love rowing, you can definitely get the most out of it here, especially with Walton’s Rowing Club across the street,” Bliss said.

Neighborhood Note

Wheatleys Eyot is an 8-hectare island in the River Thames, above Sunbury Rock. It lies on the north bank of the borough of Sunbury-on-Thames, a historic town in Surrey with a population of about 20,000. “It’s a relatively small town, but it’s well connected to London and nearby pubs, racetracks and antique fairs,” said Bliss.

The current owner uses the small motorboat to go out to nearby pubs and restaurants and to visit neighbors along the Thames, according to the listing. Lower Sunbury offers the closest facilities, but the slightly larger center of Walton is just across the river. Shepperton Village has a local butcher, bakery and pharmacy. The famous Shepperton Studios, part of Pinewood Studios, are nearby.

The house is located near the M3 and M25 motorways. Direct trains from Shepperton Station take you to London’s Waterloo Station in about 50 minutes.
